Weekly Catchup 20th August 2019

This is the first of my weekly updates.  Until the end of the season I will be doing them every Monday morning.
We have had a good spell with our horses in the last few weeks with three winners THE PINTO KID, SPANISH ARCHER & ENVISAGING.  ARCHER’S DREAM has won three of her four races including a Listed race so far.  THE PINTO KID just got beaten a neck in his last race but has now won three times.  FRED ARCHER RACING had two runners this week.   PENPAL ran exceptionally well and EXCELLED was disappointing but I think we should forget her run. The yard had two nice fillies SINCERITY & SWEET PROMISE win this week and several other horses are improving and put in nice runs.

We are very happy with THE TIN MAN as we were able to work him n the grass yesterday. He looked in good form with ENVISAGING and we are looking forward to running him on the 7th September. He will have two more pieces of work before then and if we can keep him on the grass so much the better. He is in cracking form and very happy showing his wellbeing by doing plenty of bucking. ENVISAGING worked yesterday and he will be needed to work next Saturday so we are not going to run him on Tuesday it would be too much to ask of him. It is very important to have him right for work mornings.

James decided to give LORD GEORGE a few more days before working him. He is planning to give him a light bit on Wednesday. He looks in great form and I think his partners will be pleased with the way he looks when you next see him.

SOCIETY PRINCE after 661 days will be back on the course on Tuesday. He is the only four year old in the race as all the others are three year olds. He looks magnificent and loves life. He has done a lot quite quickly and he maybe just a bit race rusty. He really enjoys his swimming which he has been doing on top of his exercise but he is fresh and well. I think he will run well and give us hope for the future.  He is a little terrier so will be doing his very best.  Everything about him is just like his Dad but unfortunately he doesn’t quite possess his ability.  He goes swimming twice a week and practically dives in.  He swims very fast whereas THE PINTO KID swims very sedately.

A little horse in good form is THE PINTO KID who looks as well as he ever. He is going to have be as he was put up 5lbs for his 2nd place and is now rated 86.  Unfortunately the only races suitable for him are two races at Kempton on the 28th August (1m2f)and 3rd September(almost 1m4f) Both races are for horses rated 0-85 and he might not get in as he is rated 86. He is very fresh and his riders have sit to tight sometimes.  He might not be the biggest but he has a huge character. He loves his swimming which he continues to do twice a week.

SPANISH ARCHER has an entry at York on Friday over 1m4f (105) It will be a maximum field and it will be an electric atmosphere which might not suit him. He is growing up all the time but the walk across the Knavesmire and being York’s biggest meeting might not be ideal for him. James is keen to run him over 1m4f as he thinks he will improve again over further. We think he is still unexposed so we really want to get it right with him. There is also a race (100)at Yarmouth next Sunday over 1m2f. As well as these two races there is a race (105)at Haydock on 5th September over 12f. If he does go on improving there is a Gp3 at Longchamp on the 20th October which could be our long term plan.  He is one of our swimmers and he also loves it.

EXCELLED was very disappointing on Thursday. I was very excited about running her as she looked fantastic and she had been good at home everything seemed right for her. Dan said that she didn’t act on the course and was never fluent which meant she got too far back and then she loses interest. There are not a lot of races for her in the next few weeks. There is a fillies handicap at Sandown on the 13th September and one at Wolverhampton on the 21st. She is in on Wednesday but it is a better race than she ran in the other day and the handicapper will drop her mark on Tuesday. It is not something James likes doing running horses back so quickly especially fillies but he will have a look at the race and see how she is tomorrow but it looks unlikely that he will run her. James is also going to look for races over 6f for her.

The break has done ARCHERS DREAM no harm at all. The aim with her is The Scarborough Stakes over 5f at Doncaster on the 11th September. It is for 2yo+ and the 2yos receive a lot of weight from the older horses but don’t seem to have done that well in the race. It will be interesting to run her over 5f which everyone seems to think will suit her.   She will carry a 3lb penalty for her Listed win.

What a fantastic first race PENPAL ran earlier in the week at Kempton. The two in front of her were experienced and fancied and she finished only a length and a half behind them. We did not want her to get into a hard battle in her first race and the race proved a nice introduction for her. There was four lengths back to the fourth. She is still quite weak looking and we would love to see her get a bit stronger behind the saddle but she is very athletic. We will giver her plenty of time to get over this race and probably just give her one more race this year before turning out for a few months.

We were able to work TURN ON THE CHARM on the Limekilns yesterday and he looked to be going very well.  James has a race at Chelmsford on the 4th September mapped out for him.  He looks so well and is taking everything in his stride and most importantly relaxed. We kept boots on him yesterday so we didn’t have the same problem with an over reach we had last time he worked on the grass.

TILLY FRANKL is improving and changing all the time. She is getting quite a character now she is getting fitter and feeling better. She lets you know what she likes and doesn’t like. She is doing two canters a day on Warren Hill. We are not rushing her and she will tell us when she is ready to go a bit faster.

We are keeping MASTER ARCHER who is now retired here for a few weeks more and he will go on the walker everyday.

One other thing for you to mull over is James and I will be buying some more horses for FRED ARCHER RACING this autumn.  If any of you have any friends or you know of anyone who might be interested in joining us we would be very grateful if you could send them our way.
